THE Z 40MM F/2 is the latest addition to Nikon’s growing Z lens range. It is light, compact and affordable – a great option for anyone new to the Nikon Z system. It’s the perfect size for carrying in your pocket, although it’s so small that you can even keep it on your camera throughout the day. Ideal for general use, this standard prime lens is suitable for Z series full-frame cameras, and on a Z series DX-format (Z fc, Z 50) you get a 60mm equivalent angle of view. The beauty of this lens is that it is extremely compact, yet captures the detail, depth and colour of subjects with accuracy – and delivers high- quality images in low-lit environments, with the f/2 maximum aperture. It has a minimum focus distance of 29cm, allowing you to capture sharp, high-resolution close-ups. If you’re looking to really make your subject stand out from the background, then

do so with beautiful bokeh effects, made possible by the nine-blade iris. Autofocus is powered by an ultra- quiet stepping motor, harnessing the extra light gathered by the Z mount. Well-equipped for video, it’s designed to significantly suppress focus breathing. A silent control ring allows you to easily set the focus, aperture, exposure compensation or ISO. Out now, at £249. nikon.co.uk

Vanguard announces tripods ideal for travel

enlarging solutions, plus medium and large format film cameras. These stands appeared busy for the whole show. Anyway, if you want to attend TPS next year, the show is on 17-20 September 2022. Autumn’s here and it’s time to get the thermals out. Actually, I’ve had mine ready since August, when summer came to an early, unseasonal end – which was very disappointing. I was just beginning to enjoy insect photography and the weather didn’t help. Although, I managed a few sessions with damselflies and dragonflies. But now it’s time to focus on other opportunities. I’m hoping to make the most of the season’s colours. Longer term, I’m thinking of Victorian viaducts as a project. There are many, so I need to funnel this down and do some research – but I could pick 50 and record those for posterity, perhaps shooting on film. Don’t know yet, but if anyone has any thoughts, please feel free to get in touch. See you again next month, when the feature-packed double issue is out from 27 November.

EDITOR’S LETTER WILLCHEUNG

WELL, DID YOU make it to the NEC for The Photography Show? I was there three days in all: one for me, and two as editor of the mag. Thanks to everyone who stopped me to say hello. The Sunday seemed quiet, but the Monday and Tuesday were almost as busy as normal. Although, I don’t think there were as many bulging carrier bags as usual. Stock probably wasn’t there to be bought, and we do know that the demand for some significant new cameras and lenses is outstripping supply. But it wasn’t just new tech that was suffering, as I heard one tripod brand had sold their stock in the first two days. I really enjoyed the show. I got to play with the Canon EOS R3 (read what I thought on page 40) and spent a few quid, too. I’d been thinking of digitally photographing some of my favourite film negatives and slides recently, and saw accessories from pixl-latr to help. I bought a simple multi-format film holder, a diffuser and non-slip mat. I’ve finished a few copies – and the kit does what I want. The analogue corner was one of the show’s most interesting areas, with fascinating developing and

The new VEO 3T series of tripods meets the growing demand for versatile kit

VANGUARD’S VEO 3T travel range aims to help photographers and content creators produce high-quality images. Importantly, it has recognised the need for tripods that are compatible with both professional-level cameras and smartphones. Four models are available, two sizes in either aluminium or carbon fibre. The 235ABP aluminium/235CBP carbon – priced at £179.99 and £229.99, respectively – folds down to 41cm. It reaches a very useful 155cm fully extended and comes with the VEO BP-50T head. For greater height, the 265HABP aluminium/265HCBP costs £219.99 and £269.99, respectively, and fully extended the camera platform is

166cm off the ground. These models come with the VEO BP-120T head. Vanguard is known for providing a wide range of features, and these tripods are no exception. In the box you can expect an Arca-compatible head, a low-angle adapter, a ballast hook, spiked feet and tripod bag. The tripods have three easy-set leg angles (20°, 50° and 80°) that allow you to capture low-angle or macro

shots with ease – with a reversible central column that enables a quick set up. The low-angle adapter has a 1/4in thread, so can be used with any tripod head. One leg of the tripod can convert rapidly into a monopod. The tripod shoulder also has two 3/8in threads, to attach accessories – you can carry everything you need for your shoot with just one tripod. vanguardworld.co.uk

Upgrade your tripod with Vanguard The VEO MT-12 Multi-Mount and Horizontal Arm delivers a versatile solution for upgrading your existing tripod Vanguard recognises that photographers don’t want to replace their perfectly good tripod every time a new one gets released, because – let’s face it – it would be impossible to keep up! However, you may want to get more out of your current tech, and that’s where the VEO MT-12 comes in. Vanguard has designed a multi-mount and horizontal arm that can fit onto any tripod with a 1/4in or 3/8in thread, allowing for the addition of up to four accessories – such as lights, a monitor or even an extra camera. The aluminium-alloy bar is 65cm long and functions as a horizontal arm, giving users the option to shoot from above – which is great for keen macro and still-life photographers. There’s a mounting plate with a reversible 3/8in to 1/4in thread at each end, enabling the addition of two more accessories. The system is kept secure by grub screws, so you can be sure that all your additional kit will be held tightly in place. The VEO MT-12 comes with two VEO+ MA1 adapters, allowing the attachment of an accessory direct on a 1/4in thread, or using a tripod head for greater control. The adapter position can be easily adjusted to achieve the optimum placement for the extra accessory. The multi-mount weighs 1025g and can bear a load of 10kg. It also comes with a luxury carry bag to protect it when not in use. The VEO MT-12 retails at a recommended price of £119.99 and is available now. vanguardworld.co.uk

WhiteWall

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Multiply your photography Use WhiteWall’s multi-piece picture service to give your best images an exciting extra dimension. The result could be a perfect finishing touch to your living space or the ideal Christmas gift

LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY can have a bold effect. However, it can also quickly seem overpowering – especially in smaller rooms. In contrast, a multi-piece picture is much more understated and delicate. The image is divided into individual sections, creating an artistic feel. This makes its appearance more subtle, conveying lightness on the walls. Not all images are suitable for this, but the right photograph can result in a very special design. Multi-piece pictures put a different emphasis on the composition of a picture, in no small part due to the contrasting division of the image. The photo is cut precisely, so that no part of the work is lost. Multi-piece pictures are available in large format gallery quality at WhiteWall for many of the unframed laminations and prints, such as photo prints set behind acrylic glass, direct prints on Alu-Dibond, HD Metal Print, photo canvases and direct prints on Forex. In the configurator, under the ‘multi-piece option’, WhiteWall offers photographs as multi-piece pictures from a size of 13x18cm in the variants two-, three- or four-part, with a horizontal or vertical division. Six different shapes for multi-part images are available in a wide range of materials, including wall brackets. Check out the options on WhiteWall’s website. Double eye-catcher: a two-part photo | diptych Cleanly splitting a photo in two achieves a multitude of effects. Separating related pictorial elements is what brings the two-piece work into focus. Depending on the structure of the picture, the two- piece work can also emphasise one half of an image in particular, and change the way it is perceived (e.g. a brilliant multi-part image as a real photo print set behind acrylic glass with a depth effect).

Four-part image | a symmetrical multi-part work Displaying a photo as a four-part image is recommended for bringing more attention to the photograph, giving it greater depth. As a multi-piece work, the photo stands out from other images on the wall. It can be said that the larger a photo is – on canvas, Alu-Dibond or behind acrylic glass – the more it is enhanced by dividing it. Due to the symmetry of the

Working a whole new angle: redesigning multi-piece pictures Multi-piece pictures offer a variety of hanging options, in addition to the special aesthetics they convey. The sequence of the individual elements can be interchanged or hung with an offset in height. It is possible to achieve a special display by hanging the pieces in the corner of a room, offering an unusual perspective in every respect.

segments, the overall picture remains harmonious (e.g. a multi-part work on canvas in high-quality latex print, with especially rich colours).

Triptych | the classic among multi-part images Creating a photograph as a multi-piece work in three segments of equal size conveys a completely new impression. The image is clearly structured, yet remains one whole. Especially for landscape shots and close-ups, the distance left between the triptych provides additional tension within the image composition (e.g. a timeless multi-part work on Alu-Dibond for indoor and outdoor use, highly durable).

SUCCESS + EXHIBITIONS + PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS + OUTINGS News Camera club

Windsor PS THE NEW SEASON is underway at the Windsor PS. “The pandemic did not stop members having an enjoyable time, with a varied programme on Zoom last season,” reports club chairman Denis Wesson. “Now that restrictions have eased, we can meet physically again. It was great to see people in the same room. In fact, we had a strong start with six new members – all younger than me! I think the pandemic has brought people back to our hobby. That said, some regular members are staying away because they have vulnerable partners, so we have Zoom meetings planned to keep them involved. “During our first meeting, The Photographer of the Year Competition 2020/21 winner was revealed. It was won by Neil Mountford with his image Into the Light, (right). We are looking forward to an evening with Eddie Hyde on 29 November, which will be Tips & Tricks in Lightroom and Photoshop.” WPS meets every Monday evening at The Old Court, St Leonards Road, Windsor, SL4 3BL at 7.45pm. Annual subscription is £60. windsor-photographic-society.co.uk

Harwich & Dovercourt CC “We’ve kick-started our new season and were delighted to see so many members return, along with some new faces,” says the club’s vice chair Ron Bell. “One of the first events on the programme was a model shoot, so thanks to Tamsyn Jo for posing. While this type of photography was familiar to some of the members, a number felt completely out of their comfort zone. But, having said that, they all took part and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.” The club runs a packed programme of events each month. harwichcameraclub.co.uk

West Haddon PC 7th annual photo exhibition report

“Our concern that the delay holding the show would result in a lack of interest was unfounded – we had our most successful show ever in terms of image entries and visitor numbers.” whphoto.club

WEST HADDON PHOTO Club is a small Northamptonshire group that meets every month, except August. “We relied on Zoom meetings to keep going through the lockdowns. The club benefitted from talks by a range of photographers who we would not normally be able to entertain,” says committee member Adrian Chandler. “Our main event this year was the photo show held on 18-19 September. There were no categories or prizes, just sections of images. We encouraged entries from all abilities. Visitors were able to browse the prints displayed in West Haddon’s All Saints’ church, then take a pew to watch the digital entries.

Viewfinder PS Viewfinder Photographic Society’s (VPS) annual show takes place at Skidby Village Hall and moves to Lockington Village Hall, 14 Chapel Street, Lockington, Driffield YO25 9SN on 15-17 October, 10am-4pm. David Marshall, VPS chairman, said: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors to our exhibition, after the disappointment of having to cancel last year. We’ve worked closely with the Village Hall Committee to ensure that everyone will feel safe. Figures show that visitor numbers have steadily increased over the years – and the exhibition has established itself as a popular event. It attracts people of all ages to browse pictures, vote for their favourites and sometimes buy a gift from one of the stalls.” The society normally meets on Monday evenings at Skidby Village Hall, Skidby, East Yorks HU16 5TG or via Zoom. viewfinderphoto.org

Ware & District PS DURING THE PANDEMIC, the society convened weekly via Zoom, but in- person meetings have started again on Wednesday evenings 8-10pm at Thundridge Village Hall, Cambridge Road, Thundridge, Herts SG12 0TU. The new season sees a varied programme of speakers, members evenings and competitions. Prospective new members can attend free for three weeks. Experienced members are always there to help. The society’s annual exhibition is planned to take place on 20 November, 10am-6pm at Thundridge Village Hall, and there will be around 100 prints on display, together with a continuous digital show. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. wareps.org.uk
