BEST SHOULDER/SLING BAG Shoulder and sling bags are perfectly suited to urban shooting, giving quick access to kit, with a decent level of security. This type varies greatly in size – from pouches, to more formidable bags big enough for a multi-lens camera outfit, tablet and laptop. Bag choice is a matter of taste, but our nominees are a good, representative sample of the best around.

BEST PHOTO BACKPACK Photo backpacks have their uses about town, but really come into their own when you’re in the country. Having equipment on your back is more comfortable, leaving two hands free for using walking poles, or taking pictures on the fly. Backpacks also come in all manner of sizes, styles and designs.

BEST FILTER/FILTER SYSTEM There’s a massive range of camera filters available, to help photographers and video makers achieve all manner of creative effects. Of course, putting anything in front of the camera lens can compromise the quality of your work (unless you’re going for soft focus). It is so important to use high-class gear, like the following products we have nominated.

BEST ROLLER/HARD CASE For travelling or location shooting, a roller/hard case might be the best option. A typical roller case will usually conform to hand baggage regulations (although you should always check before travelling), and give your kit a high level of protection. Having wheels makes moving an extensive camera outfit much easier – and some feature the ability to convert to a backpack for even greater versatility.

BEST LED LIGHT Years ago, continuous lights used to be heavy, bulky and ran very hot. They weren’t especially popular with the typical keen photographer. The latest LED lights are a world away from lights of old, though; they offer cool running and adaptability. Many have adjustable colour output – and can easily be matched to ambient light sources.

BEST ON-CAMERA FLASH There are three flash categories: this is for speedlight-type flashguns that sit on the camera hotshoe, but can be used off-camera if desired. Speedlights are often highly automated for ease of use, although you can usually find manual options on tap also.
