Security on the go

If, like David Newton, you’re a busy filmmaker on the go, working and editing on location, you need the reassurance that footage is going to be securely stored while also being lightning fast to access

D avid Newton is living proof that it’s possible these days to be completely independent as a filmmaker and to live life on the road if necessary, not only travelling to remote jobs in a van but also being able to then use it as a fully functioning portable workstation. While this is impressive enough when one is considering footage produced in standard definition, it’s positively mind-blowing when you take on board that David is now working in 4K ProRes Raw. The fact that he’s now able to handle and edit files of this size on the hoof owes much to the G-Technology storage solutions that accompany him everywhere.

“In the stills world the move across to Raw happened several years ago,” David explains. “Although many professional photographers were initially against it because of the increased file sizes it rapidly became obvious that the advantage of having what was essentially a digital negative to work with made this way of operating virtually standard. “The introduction by Apple of ProRes Raw just ahead of this year’s NAB Show promises to do the same thing for filmmakers. I’ve now invested in an Atomos Shogun Inferno to record to and am enjoying the extra flexibility this format offers at the post-production stage. For me, what is particularly impressive is how Apple has made ProRes Raw integrate perfectly with Final Cut, the editing package I use, and it just helps to make my whole workflow so much easier.” While ProRes Raw is a new standard of video compression for Raw footage that enables much smaller video file sizes than previously, the fact remains that anyone shooting in this format is still dealing with formidable amounts of data, and conventional storage devices would struggle to cope. This is where the latest generation of products from David’s favoured storage supplier G-Technology comes in. By working with a G-Technology Shuttle SSD and Mobile Pro SSD David is able to achieve

the data speeds that make the ProRes Raw workflow viable, even in the field in combination with an Apple MacBook Pro that’s a year old. “I like to be light, fast and mobile,” says David, whose latest outdoor production has seen him profiling professional rock climber and competition route setter Yann Genoux up in the Peak District. “The G-Technology products allow me to do exactly that. They’re light, they’re rugged; I can take them on location with me and they allow me to be entirely location independent.” Travelling light The way that David likes to work is almost the same as when he started out as a photographer, in that he’s often on his own and working with just his subject and, in this case, Yann’s partner Evie Cotrulia, a fellow full-time route setter. With the team pared to the bone, David had the full control that he so enjoys. But “They’re light, they’re rugged; I can take them on locationwithme and they allowme to be location independent”
