FOOD EDITION

Vladimir Hromek, food development chef at event catering company Cambridge Dining Co, has been named as one of just ten finalists in this year’s National Chef of the Year competition. Organised by the Craft Guild of Chefs, the competition challenges chefs to show exceptional skill, creativity and consistency while cooking for some of the UK’s most high-profile judges. In the semi-final stage, competitors were tasked with creating a two-course menu for four covers within two hours, inspired by this year’s overarching theme of ‘Our Sustainable Future’. The main course was a plated fish dish using plaice, mussels and violet artichokes with summer vegetables, herbs and coastal flavours, while, for the dessert, they produced a tart featuring British berries paired with sorbet, ice cream or a parfait. “This year was exciting because the live cook- offs returned to the semi-final stage – something I’ve always wanted to experience. The chance to cook in front of the judges, compete alongside some of the country’s best chefs and test myself is an incredible opportunity,” said Vladimir, who will be heading to the final on 6 October. PICTURE-PERFECT PUB NAMED ONE OF UK’S MOST ATTRACTIVE

When owners Andy and Lizzie Langridge took over the pub, many fixtures were covered in mould and almost all fittings had to be replaced, including flooring, lighting, seating and bar shelving. A self-funded renovation project, they did as much of the work as possible independently, even building the new oak panelling from scratch, in order to transform the pub into a focal point for the village.

The Green Man in Leighton Bromswold, Huntingdonshire, has been highly commended in the Refurbishment category of CAMRA’s prestigious Pub Design Awards. The category recognises stellar refurbishments of a pub building, ranging from a complete gutting to an enhanced design, with judges looking for originality and imagination in the way the building is treated.
