CANONEOS C70

to protect sales of more expensive, and therefore more profitable, cameras. That’s not something that can be levelled at the C70, as it uses the latest Dual Gain Output Super 35 sensor and Digic DV7 processor as the Canon EOS C300 Mark III, which costs around twice the price. For the first time in a Canon cinema, you can now record different formats, resolutions and bit depths on each media card slot if you want. Or just use the second card slot as a backup or for relay recording. The C70 is capable of 4K 4:2:2 10- bit recording to internal SD cards in the XF-AVC and MP4 format, too, but due to its more compact body, it doesn’t have all the spec of the C300 Mark III, such as internal Raw recording. The C300 also has higher bit rates, built-in image stabilisation, 12G-SDI connections and a lens mount that can be changed from Canon EF to P or B4 mounts, but the C70 is not missing much else and is smaller, too. Where the Raw-shooting C200 was criticised for its relatively weak internal 8-bit codecs, the C70 comes out swinging with some impressive spec. As well as 4K 4:2:2 10-bit all-Intra in up to 30p or 60fps in 2K, it can also record H.264 Long GOP 4:2:2 10-bit up to 120fps in 4K and 180fps in 2K Super 16 cropped mode. And in all recording settings up to 120fps, there is Dual Pixel CMOS AF support, as well as audio recording. In the faster modes, set using the S&Q

ABOVE The RF mount has a large throat diameter, which dwarfs the relatively modest Super 35 sensor.

lens and camera for improved image stabilisation. And the short flange distance means it’s easy to adapt other lenses to fit, such as the hugely popular Canon EF range. Use the right adapter on the EOS C70 with a suitable Canon EF lens and it retains all the AF and image stabilisation characteristics, without compromise. It’s a nice way for Canon users to edge towards the RF mount without going all- out and investing in a whole new set of glass. There is also the new EF-EOS R 0.71x lens mount adapter, which converts any EF lens to a full-frame equivalent focal length, as well as an increased light transmission of approximately one stop. We haven’t tested it yet, though. Perhaps the 100 series cameras – like the Canon C200, C300 , C500 and C700 –might have their own body design and EF or interchangeable lens mounts. And there could be a range of C70s, maybe followed by a C50 or C90, that are the start of a new style of cameras with the RF mount. Only time will tell, but the EOS C70 definitely hints at the way forward for Canon. In previous cameras, Canon is not alone in that many critics say the spec is always crippled in some way
