NEW-LOOK EOS

The first RFmount Canon video camera hints at where the next generation of Cinema EOS cameras are heading THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

WORDS ADAM DUCKWORTH

T he word hybrid has been the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, able to capture stills and high-resolution video – so a sort of hybrid, if you will. Then came mirrorless cameras, with some with specs firmly focused at the filmmaking market. Led by Panasonic and Sony, capable of stills and high-resolution movies, these hybrids have become popular with professional filmmakers for their large sensors and great video spec. Canon’s entries into this hybrid market have been the EOS-1D C – a used for all sorts of cameras in recent years. First were the HD-capable DSLRs like

mirrorless range – the first cinema camera to use the larger mount. It has many of the controls just like the EOS-1D X Mark III pro DSLR, and looks very like that camera from the front. But there’s no viewfinder and it has the traditional audio controls of the cinema range, takes the big cine-style batteries and has built-in ND filters. It’s the non- hybrid video camera that actually has a hybrid body design. Odds are this might start a whole new range of Canon EOS cinema cameras using the RF lens mount, which allows for faster apertures and better communication between

mix of a pro-spec EOS-1D digital SLR with extra movie spec – and the XC10 and XC15, which are a hybrid of a fixed-lens video camera and DSLR-type handling. And of course the mirrorless Canon EOS R5, which shoots 8K video and can record Canon Raw Light files internally. So here’s a camera that’s definitely not a hybrid: the new Canon EOS C70. It is the new entry-level model in the Cinema EOS range with no pretensions at shooting stills, although it will take an 8MP still, ideal for use as a video thumbnail. It does borrow the RF lens mount from the Canon EOS R
