FEED Winter 2022 Newsletter

FEED: Though things are improving, we’ve got a long way to go. What must the industry do better?

SARAH ADAMS: It’s imperative that we increase visibility of women in tech from a young age. People need to see women in all jobs in the industry… which isn’t the case yet. People just don’t know the jobs exist and are open to everyone. The industry could also support more women currently in roles in the sector. We need role models and mentors to guide women through and help them succeed and progress. Rise has some great programmes and is doing fantastic work across the board, along with others. But this needs to be an active role by everybody on a day-to-day basis – and not just through specifically organised programmes. ANNA LOCKWOOD: We will be successful if we can attract, retain and promote women, supporting them at any age or stage of their career and throughout their entire working lives. It’s especially exciting that the growth of women’s sports is opening up new opportunities for women who

want to work in sports broadcasting, and providing new leadership roles. Also, the growth of esports and gaming is resulting in a whole new category of sports to work in, and it’s excellent to see women leading so many of these brand-new teams and companies. EMILY BERGUN: There are so many avenues. Getting men’s sports to openly promote and discuss women’s. Increasing funding and sponsorship. Improving media coverage at all levels of women’s sports. Investing in training and opportunities for the next generation of women players in both schools and clubs. And promoting more women in leadership. It’s essential to send the message that the industry is truly committed

to gender equality – and actually taking action to demonstrate that.

MEL McDERMOTT: Future- proofing our knowledge and experience by developing the broadcasters of the future. Right now, we are still considered quite a niche market that rarely gets spoken about within education and other similar sectors. Children don’t know we’re here and what an exciting place sports broadcast is to be. This is even more the case with young girls, who quite often don’t see working in a technical role within sports as something even available!
