DAY TR I P

Sweet spots TREAT YOURSELF AT THIS TRIO OF INDULGENT EATERIES

GRAIN CULTURE Undoubtedly one of Ely’s biggest foodie draws is Grain Culture, the sage-green bakery and shop on St Mary’s Street. Beginning life as a market stall, the business has now become a legend of the Cambs food scene, best known for its sensational sourdoughs and beautiful pastries. PEACOCKS TEAROOM Tucked between Waterside Antiques and Babylon Arts, this quintessential English tearoom combines cosy, cute interiors with classic, satisfying afternoon tea. If you’re looking for a traditional take on the mandatory day-trip refuel, then this dainty destination is most definitely for you. TOM’S CAKES This is the third glorious branch of Tom’s Cakes in the county, and you can expect more of the same exquisite baked goods. Pop in for a quick takeaway bite to enjoy while wandering the city, or set yourself down for a while to people-watch from the cafe’s ideal high-street location.

HISTORIC A religious hub for over 1,300 years, Ely has a rich past to explore

Local heritage Make sure to save some energy to explore Ely’s arts and culture scene. Babylon Arts is the city’s hub for creative happenings – it’s currently gearing up to present this year’s WindowWanderland community event. From 22 October, see the city light up with colourful window displays from residents and local businesses alike. There’s also an exhibition to look forward to at the centre’s gallery: Changing Horizons , which opens on 28 October, comprises the work of four Cambridgeshire artists whose work celebrates the unique Fenland landscape. The recently reopened Ely Museum is another hotspot, offering a hands-on experience for all ages to engage with stories of the city and the surrounding Fens. The updated space has been transformed for a 21st-century audience, its historic features fully restored to showcase the ancient artefacts and intriguing exhibitions. You can book tickets ahead of your visit on the Ely Museum website. Last, but not least, you’ve got Oliver Cromwell’s House. Just around the corner from Ely Cathedral, this historic location was once home to its titular divisive figure, and contains a wealth of heritage-inspired displays to explore and enjoy. It’s also now home to its very own escape room, so – along with learning about the history of the house and its infamous former occupant – you can inject a dose of adrenaline into your day.
