DAY TR I P

Ely A MERE 30-MINUTE DRIVE FROM CENTRAL CAMBRIDGE, THE CITY OF ELY IS A FENLAND GEM THAT MAKES FOR A CHARMING DAY OUT LET’S GO TO… City staples As soon as you arrive, you’ll no doubt notice the grand cathedral that towers over the streets. It’s well worth a visit for the architecture alone, but anyone with a vague interest in history is in for a real treat – or fans of historical TV dramas such as The Crown , in which the cathedral appeared as a Westminster Abbey replacement. Tickets for Ely Cathedral still need to be booked in advance online, so get yourself organised on the day. Another place to add to your Ely hit list is the market. There are three main gatherings every week: on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. They offer seasonal, local produce, unique crafts and vintage sales, plus street food from around the world. The Farmers’ Market also pops up every second and fourth Saturday of the month, and after more than two decades, it’s established itself as one of the best in the region. There are always surprises in store, too, with guest traders showcasing their quality goods. Stay in the know with Ely Markets on social media (@elymarkets) to be the first to hear the latest updates – and look out for news on this year’s Christmas Market!

BAGS OF CHARM

You’ll find plenty more shopping inspiration throughout Ely. Family-run clothing and homeware store Jensen’s is a real highlight – providing an array of Scandinavian-style items with a modern, independent feel. The shop prides itself on good old-fashioned customer service, promising a personal and stylish shopping experience – along with the high-quality, timeless clothes and striking homeware. The store recently expanded its assortment, adding Danish brand Lene Bjerre into the mix, so you can take home a wholesome slice of hygge. Over on the high street, Topping & Company offers an escape for certified bookworms and casual browsers alike. The three-floored library of ideas is complete with cosy reading nooks and in-house coffee, so you can perch with your chosen read and take a moment for yourself. The top floor is ideal for this, as the window seats welcome you with cathedral views. Down by the river, you’ll find the aptly named Waterside Antiques. If you’re not careful, this haunt may steal a good few hours of your time; it’s packed with all manner of curious items, some of which date back over a century. You can easily get lost among its eclectic selection, with furniture, artwork, books, clothing and accessories all stacked to the rafters. Expect the unexpected, and you’ll be rewarded here.
