GLP X5 DOT WASH MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT When Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show opened at New York City’s Studio 54, lighting designer Jane Cox was tasked with a challenge: create a saturated, nightclub-esque look for the stage elements while keeping the performers’ faces clean. Associate lighting designer Nick Solyom, who handled gear specification with Cox, ultimately selected GLP’s X5 Dot Wash thanks to a recommendation from Neil Austin, the lighting designer behind Paddington the Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The Rocky Horror crew deployed 30 units of the X5 as part of a 140-fixture GLP rig, marketing the product’s Broadway debut as well as its North American theatrical debut. The X5 stood out for its ability to blend in, placed just behind filament bulb footlights. “They were recessed just enough so that the audience couldn’t see them,” said Solyom in a GLP press release. The X5 Dot Wash provided advanced creative control, keeping certain performers lit and others not, which proved useful during musical numbers like Time Warp and Frank-N-Furter’s freeze sequence. The production also implemented 30 impression X4 XL workhorse units, two impression X4 Bar 20s, 12 JDC1 Hybrid Strobe units and two Force 120 fans – all GLP products. Rocky Horror received nine Tony Award nominations in 2026, including best lighting design of a musical.
