T his one feels like cheating as it’s such a recent release – starring two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, no less – that it’s not exactly the kind of overlooked gem we normally like to champion here. But I’m willing to bet plenty of you have slept on it. For one thing, the marketing sold it as a frothy romcom, when in reality it’s one of the most unsettling films I’ve seen in a long time. I didn’t initially realise it was directed by Kristoffer Borgli, whose filmography specialises in charting spectacular psychological unravellings, but that would have been a clue that all was not as it seemed in The Drama , which follows an engaged couple as they approach their wedding day. A horrific
revelation during a game of ’the worst thing I’ve ever done’ with friends threatens to destroy everything, forcing them – and us the audience – to consider what we’re prepared to forgive, forget and ultimately accept from our loved ones. From its seemingly sweet meet cute, punctuated by flashes of horror-inspired cinematography that signal something is deeply wrong, the film sustains an almost unbearable sense of anxiety throughout. Borgli ratchets the tension so expertly that, by the time a gunshot rings out during the wedding – in reality nothing more sinister than the hapless DJ suffering a technical malfunction – you’ll almost certainly jump out of your seat, just like I did.
