T he Odyssey is the film everybody has been talking about this summer. But did you ever stop and think about the practicalities of using two million feet of 65mm film? We know we did, which is why we sought out Kodak to learn about the extraordinary logistics and technical workflow involved in processing such an extraordinary volume of film; a Sisyphean feat to rival anything found in Greek mythology, as we discover on page 8. We also go behind the scenes of A24’s upcoming thriller Onslaught . DOP Oren Soffer, in partnership with director Adam Wingard, blended old-school techniques with modern tech to achieve the film’s tactile, retro aesthetic. Read all about it on page 14. It’s often said that constraints foster creativity, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a film like The Invite . Confined to a dinner party taking place in one apartment, the restrictions were huge, but DOP Adam Newport-Berra, ASC relished the challenge, as he shares on page 20. At the other end of the spectrum is a lesson in visual maximalism from Natasha Braier, ASC, ADF, cinematographer on Boots Riley’s sophomore film I Love Boosters . She reveals how they crafted the look of the movie, from creating a bespoke set of anamorphics with Panavision to integrating a stop-motion animation sequence, on page 26. Elsewhere, we revisit the making of Raiders of the Lost Ark 45 years after its original release, while the latest instalment of The View From... takes us to Iceland. We find out what makes the Land of Fire and Ice such an irresistible filming location – and how it’s punching above its weight on the international production scene – over on page 72.
