WHAT’S THE VIBE? Lots of character. There’s sawdust on the floor (the company’s workshop is close by), painted and oiled-wood cabinets, armoires, and a huge range of industrial and shaker knobs and handles, as well as tactile, braided rugs. WHAT IS THE ETHOS? Providence, found at Burwash Manor in Barton, is a family-run business advising on colour and offering a range of cabinets and free-standing furniture. Eco to the core, the company began more than 19 years ago as a cabinet-maker. “Our work was originally inspired by simple colonial pieces, like you’d see in New England, so there is definitely still a shaker influence,” says co-founder Kathy Ritchie. “We offer free-standing furniture that includes kitchen dressers, larder cupboards, linen presses and wardrobes.

“It’s all about contrasts: mix hand-finished, scrubbed timbers with tactile textures – rugs, throws, pillows – in warm colours. Add a touch of refinement with reclaimed, mid-century furniture,” says Kathy.
