BUTCH ANNIE’S POP-UPS

Follow the neon burger down the steps on Market Street and you’ll find yourself in Butch Annie’s, one of the city centre’s top eateries. A relaxed atmosphere and emphasis on amazing quality ingredients has made this place an in-the-know favourite since it opened in early 2015, with the eaterie’s success encouraging the owners to open sister restaurant Tabanco (on Green Street) three years later. If you’ve not tried Butch Annie’s or want to revisit, now’s the perfect time, as the restaurant has just launched a series of steakhouse pop-ups, set to run on Friday and Saturday nights for a limited period. Taking place in the candlelit back room, these events see the restaurant expanding its menu into a variety of premium steak cuts, plus spicing up the drinks list with new cocktails and wines. As with everything that Butch Annie’s serve, the meat has been carefully sourced to ensure maximum flavour and quality: in this case, steaks are from grass-fed, naturally-reared beef provided by one of Scotland’s top butchers. Diners can choose between a flat iron steak or a fillet skewer, the latter arriving suspended from a hook with charred peppers and a bowl of delicious, buttery sauce. If you can’t resist a burger, there’s Butch Annie’s Classic on the menu: a rich, well balanced burger with a prime beef patty, encased in a bouncy bun. The food is pretty great value, too, with steaks coming in at £10 and the burger just £7.50. butchannies.com

MARCH AT CAMBRIDGE WINE MERCHANTS

There’s plenty on offer at Cambridge Wine Merchants’ Cherry Hinton Road branch this month, beginning with the latest instalment of the popular worldwide wine tasting sessions on 4 March. Steve from the Cambridge Wine Academy will lead a guided tour around Spain’s sunny wine regions, sampling a fine selection of wines along the way. The evening kicks off at 7.15pm, and tickets cost £25. On 7 March there’s Tunes & Tapas, where you can sample a set menu of four tapas dishes fromQue Rico Tapas – along with a carafe of wine, naturally. There will also be live music from local musician Paul McCaffrey, so you can be sure of a warm and lively atmosphere in the wine bar. Tapas fans will be pleased to hear that there is a second tapas-themed event coming up this month: on 18 March you can enjoy a wine and tapas tasting session with a special emphasis on Spanish gastronomy and wines, particularly rioja. It’s priced at £40 per person, which includes five wines and five tapas dishes. cambridgewine.com
