It was important for the trailer that we tried all the settings, which give you all these look choices. “For portraiture and people the full-frame look is stupendous. Obviously, if you’re doing CG work you just have more sensor size to play with as well, and ultimately more resolution.” AUTOFOCUS WINS AGAIN Throughout Jonathan’s career in wildlife cinematography, the idea of autofocus might have seemed wrong but yet again the Canon dual pixel variety has another huge fan. “It’s amazing! I was sceptical, and we did have a focus puller, but when we tested it on a moving motorcycle rider, for instance, coming straight at the camera – the autofocus tracked his helmet the whole way, and this was on a 400mm prime lens. It’s alarmingly good. The more you use it the more you come to trust it. Because it’s only for EF glass we did use it for certain situations, and where appropriate drama use is brilliant.” This trailer using the new Canon EOS C700 FF really is a proper camera test, with

all the different formats in use but also with the camera in use on jibs, with plenty of dynamic lighting. There are also lots of specular highlights, with explosions and fire segments. The shoot set-up was a traditional film and TV with one C700 FF set-up with anamorphic glass, and the other one with a full-frame PL lens design.
