ADVERTI SEMENT FEATURE | CANON

The new Canon EOS C700 FF full-frame camera has arrived and brings its aesthetic across production THE FULL- FRAME EFFECT

WHEN CANON UK APPROACHED Emmy award-winning production company Ember Films to make a film to promote Canon’s new EOS C700 FF, Ember had one question that they needed to be answered: what is the market for this camera? It was agreed that a new full-framed digital cinema camera was always going into the film and TV market. Jonathan Jones of Ember proposed that they plan, write, produce, direct, shoot and HDR grade not a full drama but a trailer for a proposed drama. When you need a movie and high-end television look, only a full-frame cinema camera like the C700 FF will do. Jonathan, the MD of Ember, already had an idea, which concentrated on the tragedy of a possible extinction of the world’s bee population, and the catastrophic impact it would have on the world’s environment.

“This full-frame camera is perfect for owner-operators who aspire to work in film and TV and especially Netflix, where cinematic drama production is on a huge upwards curve. We wanted to make something epic with these brand new cameras, with maybe a little slice of sci-fi for which Netflix is well known.” CANON LEGACY Jonathan has been using Canon cameras and glass for years – especially the EOS C300 MkII, a camera he rates highly. “We’ve used the camera for years for people stuff and synch work. When I heard about the new full-frame C700 with the Codex recorder attached, it was of great interest, as we are planning moves into the drama market ourselves; to use it on this trailer was a great opportunity.” Jonathan received two EOS C700 FF

cameras just a few days before production started on the trailer. The pressure was on as they only had three days to shoot it! Due to his familiarity with Canon cameras, using the C700 FF out of the box was quite intuitive. “Because of our experience with the C300 MkII, we were up and running very quickly. The picture quality was immediately impressive. You could definitely see this camera used in traditional drama, being slung on dollies, cranes and other stabilised heads. “The full-frame sensor is great! You can crop it to be Super 35 and even Super 16. So all the lenses that you already own, you can use on it and then go full-frame for VFX, for instance, and start using some of the new, large-format glass.” MIXING UP THE GLASS As mentioned (because the Canon EOS C700 FF can be cropped from the full- frame) you can mix up the glass, including some very characterful anamorphic choices, and this is what happened for the trailer. “In the trailer we had full-frame shooting with Canon CN-E primes, then for Super 35 shooting we used the Canon 30-300 zooms, which were our go-to zoom lenses. Then I did a whole lot of anamorphic as well, so it has a 2X squeeze from Cooke with its 35- 140, and then a load of Cooke anamorphic primes. There was also some 2K high-speed footage as well.” The main characters in the trailer were shot in full-frame Raw but the different glass was spread around in different scenes. “The choices that the C700 FF gives you are a huge advantage, as you can change

ABOVE The best way to demonstrate the new C700 FF’s ability to shoot drama – was to shoot a drama.
