Sound Designed to be heard

Capturing great audio is one of the most difficult challenges in filmmaking. Locations are unpredictable, interviews are often recorded in less-than-perfect conditions and there is rarely a chance to ask someone to repeat a spontaneous moment. That’s why filmmakers around the world continue to rely on Sennheiser. For generations, the company has built a reputation for offering professional audio tools that blend remarkable sound quality with real-world reliability. Its impressive range includes industry-standard shotgun microphones, compact on-camera mics, wireless systems and monitoring solutions, used everywhere from documentary shoots and newsgathering to commercials and feature productions. Sennheiser’s wireless products have become particularly popular with modern filmmakers, offering dependable performance, stable transmission and straightforward operation when every second counts. It’s the combination of innovation, quality and trust that makes Sennheiser the perfect sponsor for this year’s sound category.

Audiences may notice impressive visuals first, but it’s sound that often determines how a film feels and creates lasting impact. From dialogue and music to sound effects and atmosphere, great audio helps shape the emotional intent, maintain pace and bring stories to life. This year’s sound category winner is Melvyn Loh, whose work on a six-minute corporate film for a significant Malaysian business group impressed the judges with its sophistication, clarity and creativity. The challenge was a considerable one. The film had to communicate a wide range of business activities, from developing affordable housing to producing packaging for fast-moving consumer goods, all while remaining engaging and accessible to an international audience. None of which would seem to be a natural home for incredible audio. Achieving a strong impact required far more than simply recording the voiceover. Loh carefully combined narration, music, sound effects and detailed sound design to create a soundtrack that drives the film forward and complements the visuals at every stage.
