USB four-ward for speedy Samsung drives
Samsung has doubled down on portable SSD performance with its new P9 and P7, introducing USB4 connectivity to its external drive range. The flagship P9 delivers sequential read speeds of up to 4000MB⁄s and write speeds up to 3800MB⁄s – this is roughly double the 2000MB⁄s maximum of the previous-generation T9. Samsung says the P9’s sustained write speeds support direct 12K recording, opening it up to data-hungry professional production workflows. It’s also claimed to
be the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD capable of speeds up to 4000MB⁄s. The P7 also uses USB4 but targets broader everyday storage, with compatibility across computers, smartphones, consoles and cameras, plus two-metre drop testing. Both drives come in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. The P9’s prices run from £290⁄$340 to £2209⁄$2700, while the P7 starts at £246⁄$286, rising to £1867⁄$2290 for the mighty 8TB version. samsung.com
