NewTiffenfilters for UAVs

A dramatic rise in the numbers of women applying to become qualified UAV pilots over the past twelve months has been noted by RUSTA, which offers Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved National Qualified Entity (NQE) training courses covering a wide range of commercial industries and backgrounds. “The last three and a half years have given us a wealth of data that we’ve used to examine the demographic of operators,” says RUSTA’s MD Sion Roberts. “What we discovered is that male operators have vastly outnumbered their female counterparts, but this domination may be coming to an end. Over the last 12 months more women have been attending our five- star courses, but even more encouragingly, they have been outperforming their male peers.” Recent graduate Gemma Alcock, who was the first woman to pass all Tiffen, a company known for its expertise in the motion picture industry, has announced a series of new filters designed to partner DJI’s line-up of UAVs. Those designed for the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoomwill consist of a three-filter kit of neutral density filters and a six- filter kit of neutral density and neutral density polarisers. The filters have a multilayer and hydrophobic coating, plus a waterproof surface and scratch prevention technology. The filters guarantee ultra- low reflection rates and are said to have unmatched colour fidelity, while the 4K high definition optical glass employed in their production has a ten-year warranty. Meanwhile there is also a new Tiffen filter line-up for the Inspire 2, with kits designed to fit DJI’s Zenmuse X7, X5S, X5R and X5 cameras. Glass filters are laminated with Tiffen ColorCore Technology, with the glass itself being contained in a lightweight, low profile aluminium anti- reflective black anodised ring. All Neutral Density Filters in the kits include the new Tiffen NATural ND Filters, which is said to offer perfect neutrality across the visual and IR spectrum. www.tiffen.com

MOREWOMEN BECOMING PILOTS

of the programme’s exams with a 100% rating to obtain the UAV academies’ ‘Gold Wings’, has founded and manages her own UAV company, SkyBound Rescuer. As well as running the research and consultancy organisation for drones in emergency response, Gemma has been appointed as the Lowland Rescue’s National Technical Development Lead for Air Operations, specifically to ensure the charity becomes renowned as pioneers in drone search. She has also been named InterDrone’s ‘Woman to Watch in UAS 2018’ and is a finalist in the Dorset Venus Awards’ ‘Inspirational Woman’ category. Meanwhile Abbie-Jaye Wilson, video and photography manager at creative communications agency, Pic PR, took the course back in 2016 and at the time was the only woman in a group of eight. “It’s great to see more women enrolling on RUSTA’s training

courses,” she says, “gaining the skills and necessary flying requirements to pilot drones safely and effectively.” www.rustauas.com
