GEAR BUYERS’ GUIDE

2. LENS: CANON RF 28-70MM, F/2L £3050/$3000 www.canon.com

Of course, to go with the brand new body you have to have the lens to match. Released alongside the EOS R is a whole range of RF lenses, one of the most versatile and outdoor-friendly ones being the 28-70mm. With a maximum aperture of f/2 it’s perfectly suited for low-light conditions and rainy skies. The 28-70mm comes with lightning fast and highly accurate AF, even in the lowest of light conditions and with minimal levels of distortion. It also gives users even more control and customisation potential, as in front of the manual focus ring is an additional lens control ring (designed specifically for filmmakers) which allows you to manually adjust aperture, shutter, ISO or white-balance. As part of Canon’s L-Series, the 28-70mm is designed with robust handling and all kinds of weather in mind. It’s therefore very resistant to moisture and dust, making this lens the perfect addition to your industry-standard weatherproof kit. Unfortunately, its price tag reflects the stellar credentials.

1. CAMERA: CANON EOS R £2349/$2300 www.canon.com

Canon’s brand new EOS R, designed to compete with Sony’s Alpha series, has just hit the shelves. For those working regularly outside, the good news is that it has a magnesium body and it’s weatherproof, with thick rubber bungs to protect those delicate ports. A significant new feature is the RF mount, which features a new 12-pin connection (compared to the 8-pin of its predecessors) allowing more information to be transmitted between the body and lens. Adapters ensure the EOS R is compatible with the EF and EF-S range of lenses, too, ensuring maximum flexibility from the off. AF performance is dazzling: with 5655 focus points,

roughly 88% of the frame horizontally and 100% vertically is covered, ensuring speed and accuracy. The ISO range of 100 to 40,000 makes it ideally suited to low light, so despite cropping at 4K, the EOS R would be a great new addition to your kit.

DREAM BUYS WHEN IT’S ALL ABOUT THE QUALITY

3. TRIPOD: GITZO TRIPOD SYSTEMATIC £938/$860 www.gitzo.com

The Gitzo Systematic tripod collection is well-known for its reliability and durability, and boasts a number of models, but the new ‘series four’ and revamped ‘series five long’ with three sections are definitely stand-outs. Made from carbon fibre, the ‘five long’ is lightweight while also featuring reliable rigidity and image stability, thanks to parts of it being 22.5% thicker than its predecessor. Another great feature is its interchangeable feet, allowing you to easily swap out worn rubber feet for snow or sand shoes. It can also cope in temperatures between -30°C and 70°C, giving flexibility for any kind of weather or terrain you may face. Despite its great functionality it weighs just 2.72kg, relatively light for an industrial tripod, but it can withstand a payload of up to 40kg. Although this is an expensive and professional piece of kit it would make a huge contribution to your gear collection, giving you the ability to shoot stable footage in all kinds of challenging conditions, fromwindy deserts to long exposures on dark nights.
