WHAT SEPARATES THE INNOVATIONS THAT GENUINELY TRANSFORM WORKFLOWS FROM THOSE THAT GENERATE EXCITEMENT BUT STRUGGLE TO GAIN LONG-TERM ADOPTION?
DARREN GOSNEY: For innovations to become broadly adopted, they need to introduce significant benefits to the user. Whether that be speed and efficiency, reducing operating costs or a move to more sustainable working practices, technology should enable, enhance and enrich the user experience rather than create complications or barriers to adoption. Additionally, it is important to identify a genuine market problem and develop solutions that can be adopted without hugely disrupting existing infrastructure. Ultimately, the long-term benefits have to outweigh any short-term pain of making that change. RONEN ARTMAN: It comes down to wants versus needs. Every IBC brings a new wave of technology and it’s easy for manufacturers to chase innovation for its own sake, launching products that look impressive but don’t answer a real problem. The innovations that last are the ones built around what broadcasters actually need, not what’s technically possible. LiveU IQ (LIQ) is a good example of this. It was built to solve the problem of AI-driven cellular operator selection, delivering intelligent connectivity as a result. Its first large-scale global deployment was at the 2026 Winter Games in Italy, where broadcasters relied on LIQ to dynamically manage connectivity in some of the most demanding live production environments. Around 60% of supported sessions were transmitted using LIQ, achieving
more than 36% higher average bit rates and enabling consistent 4K and HDR coverage at scale. Broadcasters could confidently rely on IP contribution as a primary workflow, supporting traditional broadcast and digital- first distribution strategies. Following this, broadcasters used LIQ at the recent FIFA World Cup. LIQ, the LU800 and the LU900Q unit demonstrated LiveU’s focus on robust, high-performance field connectivity, helping broadcasters maintain reliable live transmissions in demanding sports production environments, while shifting heavy infrastructure to the cloud allowed them to expand their tournament footprint, capture more angles and maximise ROI without compromising on broadcast quality. The operation supported 31,000 live transmissions and 17,000 broadcast hours for customers in 45 countries, representing 695TB of data. JAMIE DUNN: In the end, the most important aspect of any product or innovation is which problems it solves. The bigger the challenge, the more impactful the innovation. The broadcast industry is currently facing the biggest challenges it has faced with changing content viewing habits. The key is to create more content for less cost, so any innovation that addresses the commercial aspects of content creation and distribution through workflow optimisation or stronger asset utilisation will ultimately be adopted.
