mixers) allows engineers to take control of the Lawo hardware at the broadcast centre or hub. Furthermore, the mxGUI proved its power during remote product demonstrations involving two webcams, a Google Hangout session and one console, located in Antwerp in Belgium, for real- time control of its sibling in Groningen in the Netherlands. Layer and page switching, fader movements and setting tweaks in Antwerp were immediately replicated by the console in Groningen, and the customer liked what they saw and heard. VIRTUAL FACTORY ACCEPTANCE In early April, the world learned of the first virtual factory acceptance test in the history of broadcast for Norway’s NRK, which centred on three Lawo Power Core platforms and an mc²56 mixing console. During the three-day session, the NRK team worked from their homes in Oslo, Norway, with Lawo’s project manager, Börje Brüggemann, located at his home in France. Only Jürgen Sigrist, the system engineer and programmer, was physically at Lawo’s HQ in Rastatt, where he had prepared the set-up under review. Sigrist routed three VisTool stations used
for Power Core control to a so-called ‘feedback computer’ and added one instance of mxGUI to display the mc²56’s status and instantiate control from Oslo. Audio interfaces were tested using a tone generator that Sigrist connected to the requested inputs, and the moving on- screen meters allowed everybody to verify that the audio signals were received. “At the end of the day, the difference from a physical factory acceptance was almost insignificant,” comments Sigrist. This scenario worked so well that it was repeated a few days later with a Nova73 core for NRK’s news department, this time with VPN-based control of the Power Core and VSM control system configuration from Amsterdam – and, of course, checks from Oslo, France and Rastatt. AND THERE IS MORE In light of its successful virtual factory acceptance tests, Lawo’s configuration and factory acceptance tests on two full-IP OB trucks in Germany (from specialists in Belgium and the Netherlands) and on NEP’s new SS4 OB truck from the USA almost pale in comparison, but they were big successes in their own right.
