Hybrid without compromise The SL3-P is Leica’s strongest hybrid camera because it doesn't force creators to choose between stills and video. The 44-megapixel sensor delivers ample resolution for commercial photography, landscapes and studio work, while its impressive burst rates mean it is equally capable of handling action. At the same time, its video credentials are thoroughly modern. Open gate recording offers maximum flexibility for reframing content across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and traditional widescreen delivery. Internal ProRes recording simplifies post-production, while direct SSD recording avoids the storage limitations often associated with high-resolution codecs. The ability to shoot 176-megapixel multi- shot images further broadens its appeal for architecture, product and landscape specialists. This is one camera capable of handling virtually every imaging discipline. Buying into Leica no longer means buying only Leica lenses. Thanks to the L-Mount Alliance, the SL3-P works with optics from Panasonic, Sigma and other manufacturers. That dramatically reduces the cost of building a complete system, if the lure of the beautiful Leica-branded fast lenses is a spend too far. To save some cash, Leica is offering kits with its own glass. The SL3-P with 28-70mm f⁄2.8 costs £6100⁄$7790, while adding the 24-70mm f⁄2.8 and 70-200mm f⁄2.8 brings the package to £8560⁄$10,995. Considering the latter lenses individually cost £2379⁄$3205 and £2880⁄$3550, respectively, you are effectively acquiring
the camera body for around £3300⁄$4240. That makes entering the Leica ecosystem a tad more attainable than you might expect. Why not buy the Panasonic? It is impossible to ignore the comparison and, if ultimate value is your priority, the Panasonic S1R II is the rational choice. If headline specifications alone determined purchasing decisions, there would be little reason for the Leica to exist. The S1R II even has a fully articulating screen compared to Leica’s tilt-only version, as well as superior cooling and more advanced AI autofocus. But cameras aren’t bought solely with spreadsheets – the SL3-P feels different, and certainly heavier and more premium. The menus are cleaner, the body is more beautifully engineered. Leica’s colour science has its own distinctive character, while the overall shooting experience feels calmer and more deliberate. Leica wants you to believe it’s like comparing a luxury mechanical watch with a smartwatch. Both tell the time, but only one makes you feel good whenever you wear it.

Our rating: 9 /10 The Leica SL3-P isn’t the most affordable hybrid camera and it isn’t even the specification leader
in every category. Yet reducing it to a comparison of frame rates, megapixels and recording formats misses the point. What Leica has created is a camera that combines outstanding stills, pro video features and one of the finest user experiences available today. This is for those who understand the intangibles Leica brings beyond the specification sheet: its craftsmanship, design philosophy, shooting experience and timeless appeal.
