With our freedoms now largely restored, however, and open days once more on the calendar, it’s possible to get the best of both worlds. Online research may not give prospective families a definitive answer as to whether a school will be right for their child, but it can certainly prompt questions to ask and suggest areas to explore in more detail during an in-person visit. While the virtual tour provides a helpful introduction, the drop-down menus can yield real gold. Don’t just read the head’s introduction, but see if they also have a blog. If so, is it thoughtful, interesting, helpful to parents and well written – or a regular dose of pontification? If your child has a favourite subject (or several), how prominent is it on the website? Do they merit their own Twitter accounts, are heads of department allowed free rein to wax lyrical about their approach, facilities and results? Is there the sense that the co-curricular timetable, from prominent team sports to niche after-school activities, is there to add just another glittering feather to the school’s cap, or is it valued in its own right?
