BUILDING THE APP As the plan advanced, Sky News tapped the services of AWS (Amazon Web Services) Elemental and two AWS tech partners, GrayMeta and UI Centric. Developed over just a few weeks, the workflow began with AWS Elemental Live single-channel video encoder ingesting and processing live video from a local input located close to an OB truck. The next stage was delivery to cloud- based AWS Elemental Media Services for processing of live and on-demand multiscreen content. The AWS Elemental MediaPackage service was used for live-to- VOD applications, including catch-up TV, while the Amazon CloudFront CDN unified content for distribution to viewers in the UK and Europe. For surely the most crucial single component – the identification and tagging of celebrities along with relevant information – Sky combined the GrayMeta data analysis platform with the Amazon Rekognition video and image analysis service. Then human moderation of the identifications took place prior to the information being sent to the viewer. The production workflow reached its conclusion with a front-end application and video player, ‘Royal Wedding: Who’s Who Live’, developed by creative engineering firm
UI Centric and accessible via the Sky News app or skynews.com. Video content from the application was also made available on demand after the event.
