Also fans of timeless appeal are the team at Tomas Kitchen Living, a bespoke kitchen brand with design studios in Cambridge, London and St Albans. The company takes a collaborative approach to designing kitchens, with the team guiding customers through the range of choices to see which would be best suited, before the designs are manufactured at the production centre right here in Cambridge. The team at Tomas Kitchen Living are skilled at making multi-use spaces work as a harmonious whole, and the company offers both kitchen and interior design services. “It’s useful to have some ideas and lists, but a good kitchen designer will have a checklist and pretty much every aspect of the kitchen is covered during the design meetings,” comments the company’s director, Tomas Hinton. “The oven position is probably the main item that dictates which way a design will go – if there’s space to have ovens at eye level it’s desirable, but it’s

not that unusual to position them below a counter when space is at a premium or a client doesn’t want them to be all that visible. Unlike a fridge, the oven can be placed lower if the cook is happy to bend down a little!” Ultimately, says Tomas, it all comes down to quality: in design, cabinetry, appliances and installation. “We don’t get too excited about current trends – I know it sounds boring, but the kitchens we build are designed to outlast any trends, and the focus is more around that timeless modern classic style we have become known for,” he explains. His advice is simple: “Choose good colours that don’t risk becoming dated, great-quality components and remember that good design is always in style!” Tomas suggests selecting neutral colourings and finishes as a base, then layering on features and accents to make a statement. “Wall paints, wallpapers, fabrics all have a huge impact on how a room feels – and unlike the kitchen itself, are relatively easy to update and refresh,” he concludes. “Remember that good design is always in style”
