Rotolight’s CineSFX suite is noteworthy, but certainly not alone in such an exciting area of innovation. Astera’s Titan Tube, for example, offers ‘layer effects’ functionality, meaning efficient customisation and control of many parameters can be combined in stacks of up to eight. Quasar Science, on the other hand, is making a move away from modes with the Double Rainbow – and this extends to SFX control. “For us, light is a parameter- based entry. You simply set a white point and HSL values. For effects, it’s as simple as tweaking timing parameters or whatever else you need. It’s a great way of working,” Kang says, recalling his years as a DOP. “Different modes ordinarily require recalibration, even if you change at the same colour point. We’re giving creatives full control at all times.” GRIPPING ADVANCEMENTS Away from functionality, the way we use fixtures is a continued area of development.
