As summer sets in, materials can also lift the brightness of your space. “Think about the light in the room and whether it needs to be enhanced by choosing work surfaces that reflect, or by adding extra lighting to cabinet interiors,” says Allison. Gabi points out: “With open-plan living, people are empowered to be bolder and have darker kitchen finishes, as these areas are generally light and airy.” After gaining confidence, look for sophisticated ways to coordinate the components of your kitchen. “You can mix harsher or colder colours and textures with softer and warmer ones, to offset and contrast the look accordingly – dependant upon the style and feel you are aiming for,” says Lucy. “I would suggest two main contrasting colours – to create depth and balance – and a third used as an accent, such as a colour picked out

from your worktops, to bring your kitchen combination together.” SWEET AND SIMPLE Although there are a wealth of materials to choose from, the best designs keep things simple. “Try to avoid choosing a lot of busy materials, as it makes it more difficult to achieve a harmonious look,” Allison suggests. It’s worth keeping in mind that, while trends will change, materials will

stay constant – as long as cheap solutions are avoided. This does not prevent you from nodding towards what’s in style now, however. “You can incorporate these trends subtly with handles, taps, shelving and accessories,” says Lucy. Whether you’re starting from scratch or raring for a renovation, scrupulous planning and opting for materials that last a lifetime are your best bet – and will look great, too.
