ometimes, you just need something affordable and, especially during Covid, easily ‘remotable’ that lets you log in and get going. Something where you don’t have to worry about a graphics engine

or a massive machine.” So says Adam Rose, project manager at UK- based firm Chapter 3 Graphics, which produces graphics for events in the sports, education and corporate sectors. While his firm is a dyed-in-the- wool Viz Engine user, Rose adds that expensive, dedicated hardware is not always the best solution. The graphics industry is now waking up to new web-based software alternatives, and service providers like Chapter 3 are helping people access the right graphics solutions for the job. Chapter 3 first dipped its toe in the water last year with Singular.Live, a cloud-based digital overlay that works with existing hardware, with no need for any additional equipment. The platform was first trialled with a museum client, adding tickers to a series of live, interactive web broadcasts for an audience of schoolchildren during the pandemic. Following this successful run, Chapter 3 decided to use the Singular platform for a bigger event – women’s T20 cricket in New Zealand, with Whisper Films for BT Sport. It created a graphics package for the live matches, as well as the pre- and post- game presentations.

According to Rose, Singular ’s web-based architecture made last-minute changes and additions to the customised overlays (which were contributed by physically separated production teams), a “quick and efficient process”. One of Singular ’s USPs is an authoring environment allowing users to build their own graphic overlays and features. This also includes a control interface, enabling users to build playlists and control graphics from their web browser. APIs and SDKs allow clients to access Singular ’s Intelligent Overlay platform externally, or build their own dedicated control applications. Chapter 3 also took advantage of Singular ’s API to build an intuitive and responsive web app for the team covering women’s T20 cricket, which was used on several devices, ranging from tablets to phones
