NIGHT L I F E

THE NIGHTLIFE EVENTS NOT TO MISS THIS MONTH

BEANS ON TOAST

Beans on Toast, real name Jay McAllister, has evolved from festival novelty act to something approaching an alternative national treasure. Always saying it like it is, he makes protest songs, gruff love songs, songs about the everyday and occasionally, songs about penguins’ sense of humour. His latest album, The Inevitable Train Wreck , is released this month, focusing on the less-than-cheery topic of “our dying planet”. Catch him doing his thing on 11 December at The Portland, tickets are £15. theportlandarms.co.uk

FUNK & SOUL CLUB

In what’s rapidly becoming one of our favourite Christmas in Cambridge traditions, Craig Charles is back with his yearly pilgrimage to the city on 20 December. Always packed, this gig handily falls on the day of the year when many people down tools for Christmas hols, serving up a night of funk and soul that the crowd can’t seem to get enough of. As with Charles’ 6 Music show, you can expect both stone-cold classics and red-hot new releases, via a few weird and wonderful mixes, mash-ups and covers. Trust us, it’s fun. Tickets are £19.50 and it runs from 10pm-2am. junction.co.uk
