[ LINE IN THE SAND ] OSCARS TAKES STANCE ON AI A s the Academy looks ahead to its 99th edition in 2027, it has approved a slate of new rules including addressing the use of generative AI. Under acting, all performances considered for an award must be executed by real humans, while fully synthetic or AI-generated actors are ineligible. Insofar as writing goes, screenplays must be authored by humans to compete, and while GenAI is not outrightly banned elsewhere, under eligibility, ‘the Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship’, giving it the power to evaluate the acceptable degree of AI input on more of a case-by-case basis.
