REDEFINING THE STATE OF THE ART INLEDPANELS Whether I’mshooting a feature film in Bhutan or a commercial in Costa Rica, one of my biggest passions is the thrill of exploring new territories – closely followed by new technologies and advances in gear, especially those that giveme creative freedomand flexibility on location. LED lighting is a particular interest, and it’s why I amso excited by Litepanels’ newGemini 2x1 Soft Panel. It’s incredibly lightweight, easy to set up and use, and creates different kinds of lighting effects. Since I also own rental houses in both Costa Rica and Panama, I could instantly see Gemini’s possibilities not only for my own projects, but also for my rental customers. In addition to bold colours, daylight or tungsten, we can dial in a range of dynamic lighting effects and gels that complement both daylight and tungsten sources —whether using available light on location or in the studio with amixture of other types of LED. I particularly love the way Gemini complementsmy camera, the ARRI ALEXA. The Gemini’s precision LED technologymakes it very easy to achieve any colour with full depth, saturation and accuracy. Its ability to provide flicker-free light at any frame rate or shutter angle allowsme to experiment with high-speed shootingwithout having to worry. It stays flicker-free evenwhen we dim the light all the way down to near zero, a feat that really sets this panel apart fromothers. Gemini’s ease of use especially comes into play for location shoots, where we’re often workingwith local crew that might not be familiar with the gear. It’s so easy to use that we don’t have to spendmuch, if any, time, teaching them how to use it. The internal ballast and on-board power supply are a huge plus, making it easy for us to transport and rig it in any number of ways. Gemini can also run on battery power without any loss of intensity or functionality. This came into play recently when I shot a New Balance commercial, both on a beach in Costa Rica and in a studio in Los Angeles. In Costa Rica, we powered the panels with Anton/Bauer’s Cine VCLX batteries, which gavememore-
than-adequate run time via a 3-pin XLR 28V DC connection. My four Geminis have become essential components inmy kit, joining Litepanels’ Astra panels and Sola fresnels asmy LEDmainstays. I particularly love the combination of the Gemini and the Sola 6+ – the perfect blend of soft and hard light. And the support I’ve had from the Litepanels teamhas been outstanding for both sides of my business.
