LIGHTING LED FUTURE

that a digital lighting ecosystem can offer, including data management of settings and location, spectral alignment between different fixtures, and a few other system-wide features and benefits that Cineo and others will be introducing over the next several years. KK, Digital Sputnik: All technology is a compromise at some level. I think that the industry has understood the compromises of LED technology quite well and the conclusion is that the advantages of time and energy savings plus the ability to see an image that is very close to final on the set far outweigh the negatives. •AlDeMayo,co-founder/CEO,LiteGear:(AdeM) •ByronBrown,LitepanelsProductManager:(BB) •DedoWeigert,DedoWeigertFilm:(DW) •KlausHamlescher,Productsupport,Sumolight:(KH) •FriederHochheim, founder,KinoFlo:(FH) •ChuckEdwards,CTO,CineoLighting:(CE) •KaurKallas,CEO,DigitalSputnik:(KK) •MikeWagner,LightingProductManager,ARRI:(MW) •RichPierceall,CEO,CineoLighting:(RP) •SteveHoward,PinewoodMBSLighting:(SH) •RodGammons,MD,Rotolight:(RG) KEY TO CONTRIBUTORS

taste and the personal interpretation, and then, even if experienced DOPs all claim to have the one and only eye in the world, their interpretation of colour and their psychological make- up may still vary wildly. RG, Rotolight: Early LEDs were low power and had poor colour accuracy; the build quality and consistency of colour between lights meant they were not reliable. Now, there is no reason why LED should be seen as a compromise. It offers incredible energy savings and more weapons to the creative arsenal. KH, Sumolight: Yes, we think that this already happened two years ago. FH, Kino Flo: Critical mass is not the way of defining the situation. The quality of the instruments has steadily been improving and as such the options of fixtures to work with has also expanded. Lower power consumption, lighter fixtures, better spectral quality, smaller crews all play a part in the further penetration of LED lighting into the cinema production market. RP, Cineo Lighting: No, I don’t think so. We have solved many of the drawbacks the industry experienced with LED technology, like output, spectral quality, but there is so much more

BB, Litepanels: Most would say that. Some would even argue that advances in high-quality LED lighting is one of the best things that’s happened to broadcast and cinema production in decades. When compared with traditional tungsten or HMI lighting fixtures, LEDs offer both operational and financial benefits – longer life, lower maintenance, lower energy bills, and of course, brighter, more consistent lighting. DW, Dedo Weigert Film: Again, this is personal interpretation, because as image creators we are the slaves of the director, but with him we are the slaves of the story. Which kind of a story do you want to tell, what style do you want to use for your image development? There is an endless number of interpretations, there are no fixed rules, and that’s why all kinds of technologies may still be used. There is not a single ‘best brush’ to be used by all painters. They may have their personal preferences and their personal experiences and fears, and psychological hindrances towards one or the other. So yes, there will be an overwhelming use of LEDs, but we still have to consider the personal
