AWARDS GEAR OF THE YEAR SPECIAL AWARDS

It’s been a bumper year for innovation in everything from cameras to hard drives, and just about everything else in-between. Our Innovation of the Year category included 14 products, such as mics, filters, SSDs, streaming tech and file codecs. But the stars are the cameras, and the winner of Innovation of the Year is one of those – the Red Komodo. At a body-only price of just £5940/$5995 – which is very affordable for a Red – the camera offers a global shutter to avoid rolling-shutter nasties, advanced phase detection AF using a Canon RF lens mount, and 6K recording from its Super 35 sensor. It records in Red’s famous R3D Raw format or various flavours of ProRes 422 for a faster workflow, can be built up into a formidable cinema camera rig or stripped down for use on a gimbal. It gives the famous Red quality at a price tag few ever thought would be featured on a new Red camera. Our Launch of the Year award goes to the king of resolution, the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K. Blackmagic is the only company to get totally involved in its own sensor technology and its own Blackmagic Raw recording format, which is then edited in Blackmagic’s industry- standard DaVinci Resolve software,

which gives total integration and is unique. Although nobody is calling for 12K recording right now, it means you’re future-proofing footage, and that huge resolution means that, if you are delivering in HD or even 4K, you can crop in and do basic camera moves in the edit. The Super 35 sensor is packed with very tiny photosites, which may not give the best high-ISO performance, but when there is plenty of light, the highlight roll-off and colour gradation are much more akin to film. And skin tones are beautiful. It’s a very different way of making filmic-looking 4K films right now, all packaged in a rugged body that filmmakers love.
