AWARDS FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR
The winning feature-length documentary, The Sunday Times: 200 Years in the Making directed by Ian Allardyce of Really Nice Content, tells the story of one of the world’s most famous newspapers through the eyes of past and present reporters. “The budget was modest and I worked mostly alone as a freelancer. I spent many weeks sneaking around, self-shooting on my beloved Sony FX6,” says Allardyce. “The highlight was travelling to Afghanistan one year after the Taliban took over and being among the first media in their heartland province, Zabul. I travelled with Sunday Times correspondent Christina Lamb, but we were more or less on our own working with local charities.” CINEMATOGRAPHY W INNER: IAN ALLARDYCE FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES: 200 YEARS IN THE MAKING

MUSIC VIDEO
Music videos often have incredible creativity, and the winning entry for this category is visually incredible, matching the electronic sound setting perfectly. The video for Snakes of Russia’s track Summoner was directed by Kays Al-Atrakchi and features actor Daniel Nelson journeying from city to desert, all the time accompanied by computer-generated jellyfish. All shot in monochrome Cinemascope widescreen, the city and desert locations are epic and the interior shots are dark and moody. It’s a feast for the eyes and ears. WINNER: KAYS AL-ATRAKCHI FOR SUMMONER BY THE SNAKES OF RUSSIA

W INNER: JONATHAN DAVIES FOR REK 41
When a new social club, Rek 41, was set up to give people a place to hang out away from alcohol and drugs, Jonathan Davies was on hand to document its opening – which he did with creativity and understanding. “I got Gareth Williams to write a poem and read it at the opening of the social club,” says Davies. “He’s an up-and-coming poet who was keen to help.” And the unique verse helps to make the film really stand out.

W INNER: MARK FORBES FOR MOTHER & WILD
An ambitious, full-length indie feature film called Mother & Wild is the winner of the open category for experienced filmmaker Mark Forbes, who has been a writer, director and cinematographer for 23 years. The self-funded film is the story of a bereaved mum and daughter, who take a trip to a seaside town in East Sussex as they reconnect after two years of estrangement. “I explored real characters from my own life,” says Forbes. “Having experienced cancer in my family when my stepfather died, I wrote Mother & Wild with the main character, Rita, trying to reconnect with her daughter who had cancer for two years.” The film is dedicated to Sally Mates, who played the role of Suzy in the film and has since passed away.
