AWARDS FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR

FUTURE FILMMAKER W INNER: DOMINIC DANSON FOR I AM NOWHERE

This is where the future of our exciting industry appears: an open class where anything goes. We wanted to see creativity in visually stunning work from the thought leaders of tomorrow and we were not disappointed by the work of Dominic Danson. Danson’s short sci-fi thriller, I Am Nowhere , proves you don’t need masses of expensive equipment to be truly creative, as he shot the whole film for £700 with a crew of seven people. “It’s the most ambitious thing I’ve done so far,” he remarks. And the result is epic, thanks to a great choice of location, lenses, composition and grading. Danson is definitely one to watch for the future.

CVP is so much more than Britain’s leading cinematography, broadcast and TV equipment supplier. It’s staffed by experts who help filmmakers take the next step in their careers. CVP holds events, product demonstrations and education sessions to help a new generation of filmmakers reach their full potential. With CVP Education and CVPTV offering insight that’s hard to get elsewhere, it’s a natural fit for the future filmmaker category.

The moment we saw this film, it was obvious it was going to be tough to beat. Marcus Rangel’s Prairie Burn is a visually stunning piece of work. Although there are plenty of non-aerial shots in the film, it’s the airborne work that makes it really stand out. “I also wanted to have this video tell a story, instead of just being an amazing view of cinematography,” describes Rangel. “I paired the film with some cowboy poetry I’d captured earlier in the year for our client. Flying into the fire was something incredible to do – and only possible with a drone!” AERIAL W INNER: MARCUS RANGEL FOR PRAIRIE BURN

So much creative video work is produced for social media, be it marketing campaigns or stunning content to grow an audience. Jaguar Cars commissioned Adrian Weinbrecht to create a series of uber-cool, super-stylish, extremely colourful short clips of the company’s latest car launch. It’s fun, classy, aspirational and really does take Jaguar in a new direction. SOCIAL MEDIA W INNER: ADRIAN WEINBRECHT FOR JAGUAR CARS

WINNER: ZUZANA VON SCHLIPPE FOR EIFFEL TOWER

YouTube continues to take over the planet when it comes to delivering video content, and our winner proves you don’t need super-polished films to launch a successful channel, but simply good ideas. Zuzana von Schlippe and her husband Nick run film production company Caesar Pictures, but both are also experienced actors – who initially met on a film school course. “During the pandemic, we started making joyful comedy short films and have been releasing them every week on our YouTube channel,” explains Zuzana. “We have released more than 150 comedy shorts and have won 23 international film festival awards for them.”

Social media video is serious business for filmmakers creating engaging and compelling content. When it’s time to level up your work, lighting is a must-have – and Amaran offers a selection of incredibly good- value LED lights. The sister brand of Aputure, Amaran uses lots of the same technology – but often in more compact fixtures – which can also take the range of Aputure modifiers.
