on-demand world. It feels like dollars are being left on the table. FEED: HOW CAN MEDIA HELP IN SOLVING SOCIETY’S BIG PROBLEMS? HARRY GRINLING: Now more than ever we need to present impartiality and fair representation. The big problems now, which all companies can do their part to solve, are diversity and sustainability. When it comes to diversity, our industry is full of the same demographic – white, middle- aged men. Just look at the tradeshows. While the panel diversity has improved over the years, it has definitely got a way to go – we all have a way to go. I think it needs a fundamental shift to ensure hiring has non-prejudicial job descriptions and interview processes. Sustainability is another area that all companies have a responsibility to review – and not just on things like single-use plastic. The shift to cloud technology brings huge benefits but can also mean a large amount of unregulated usage. Take, for instance, rendering: this used to take a long time on an in-house render farm. Now you can spin up hundreds or thousands of machines to perform the same task in minutes, but the computing power requires energy. I believe that all facilities and system integrators need a green computing mindset, from architecture, infrastructure, software to the

hardware deployed. Just because it’s not on your property does not mean it’s not your responsibility! NEIL MAYCOCK: Keeping people informed with balanced information and insight is still done best by media companies, whether content is consumed over the air, online or via social channels. In certain parts of the world, the ‘news’ is all too partisan, and it would be good to see social responsibility take precedent over political agendas. DAVID SCHLEIFER: Communication is at the core of how humanity mobilises to deal with issues. We have seen an explosion in the amount of content available worldwide that has undermined the faith people have previously placed in the news and information they receive. New technology that can allow artificially generated content to be indistinguishable from reality will put a

new burden on media businesses and the vendors who support them to authenticate, validate, and clarify fact from fiction. FEED: HOWWOULD YOU LIKE TO BE CONSUMING MEDIA IN FIVE YEARS? JAMES DEAN: I’d just like to pick up any device and automatically have access to any content anywhere. I would make decisions on the fly to pay to access through micro-transactions or a subscription model of genres I’m particularly passionate about. HARRY GRINLING: I'm hoping that in five years we will be at a point where AR and 5G technology will have changed how we consume media. The idea of sitting on a train, with my AR goggles on, spinning up a high fidelity TV to watch my favourite VOD/ OTT service sounds super appealing!
