which can transmit and receive through all sides of the phone, while the latest beamforming technology focuses on the best available signal to make sure there are no failures. Not all locations have 5G, so the phone is backwards compatible with 4G LTE, 3G and 2G data. It also has two SIM card slots, so you fit two different SIMs and choose which one to use at any time – ideal for foreign travel. Or you can put a microSD card into one of the slots and use it as additional memory. Cards of up to 1TB are available – add that to the phone’s 512GB capacity, and you have a massive amount of storage. The phone also has a USB-C port for charging or tethering to a computer. If you plug in the Sony A1 or A7S III via USB-C, it uses the phone as a modem via 5G or 4G. So, you can connect to an FTP server to transfer files. Previous-generation Sony mirrorless cameras, like the A9 II, required a dongle to transfer files. The 5G Endurance Mode can also be activated, so data is continuously transferred at maximum 5G mmWave speeds while the camera is tethered.

The systemwas developed in conjunction with Sony Alpha engineers – and is used by Photo Pro and Cinema Pro apps. These mimic the controls of Sony mirrorless or cinema cameras, and offer manual controls, support for shooting Raw, and up to 20fps continuous wide-angle shooting or 10fps at 16mm or 70mm. There is also real-time eye autofocus that works on both humans and animals. If that’s toomuch for casual users, there is a typical, smartphone-type, basic photo app offering point-and- shoot ease. And there is also a front- facing 8-megapixel selfie camera with HDR. As a typical smartphone, it’s one of the best for anyone who wants to create mobile content. As a device that tethers to your new-generation Sony Alpha and works as a monitor, live streaming device and FTP hotspot to share your files, it’s in a league of its own.
The Sony is also a fully featured, high-end smartphone that runs on Android. It comes pre-installed with the Imaging Edge mobile app, to use your camera’s Wi-Fi to connect. It can then be a wireless monitor, changing camera settings, or accepting photos or video files direct from the camera. If you use a different camera, most have their own companion apps, downloadable from the Google Play store. As expected, the phone has its own high-end camera built in, with a variety of apps. There are actually three different rear-facing cameras, each with their own Zeiss lenses: a 16mm f/2.2 ultra-wide with an 1/2.55 Exmor RS sensor, a 24mm f/1.7 wide angle with a 1/1.7 Exmor RS sensor, and a 70mm f/2.4 telephoto with a 1/3.4 sensor. These can record stills in a variety of formats and videos at up to 4K HDR resolution, with a 21:9 aspect ratio at 24, 30, 60 and 120fps.
