RAPID URBANISATION You may think these mega trends won’t effect you but you’re wrong. Shane explains the irrevocable future as HP sees it: “Soon there will be about 8.6 billion people on the planet. In the very near future 70% of those people will live in cities. So the cities are getting bigger, in 1991 there were ten megacities (megacities are cities of 10 million or more people). By 2040 there will be 41 megacities. You’ll find themmostly in Asia, China, India and South America. As the cities get bigger and more dense, how we work and we entertain and how we live will fundamentally change.

“When 70% of people live in these cities everything about what we do, how we consume film, the entertainment, what constitutes a cinema, what constitutes how we consume the content around us will change. Also how we design products, our workstations, notebooks… If we take the current process we use for designing and manufacturing products of all types – Twinkies, Toyotas, Tablets – and you just maintain the same methodology and project it through to the next 30 years, it would take more resources than we have to sustain it, so we have to look at things fundamentally differently. That’s why we have put so much focus on things like 3D printing, where you consume and build on demand.” CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS “When you dive in to this subject,” continues Shane, “you will see that it has a profound effect on film and our entertainment industry overall. The interesting thing is that 90% of the

world’s growth will be in the emerging markets. That means that only 10% of growth will appear in Western Europe and the USA. “Also there’s the changing of the generations itself. 1.4 billion people will be over the age of 60 by 2030, people are living longer and you have to look at how technology will change and benefit them – in film or entertainment, how that effects them and how they live longer and what entertainment they actually want. BY 2040 THERE WILL BE 41 MEGACITIES, (10 MILLION OR MORE PEOPLE) MOSTLY IN ASIA, CHINA, INDIA AND SOUTH AMERICA
