Tech firm SAP launches esports event

SAP wants to establish a reputation as a tech partner to the esports sector, recently hosting its first community tournament in Berlin. The hybrid event brought together nearly 100 gamers (who played Dota 2 in mixed teams composed of Berlin students and SAP employers). There were 250 in-person guests and 2500 live followers, reaching more than 420,000 on social media. “It’s amazing!” said Juergen Mueller, SAP chief technology officer. “The arena is packed, you can sense the excitement, it’s noisy, and people are having a lot of fun. As a technology company, we use our expertise in data analytics and innovation in esports, just like any other business area, to help gamers tell the story behind their data.” Match data and stats can be shared instantly with audiences and commentators in real time, offering performance and strategy insights. At the SAP event, top Dota 2 observer and game event producer Jonathan Liebig used SAP BTP to combine data from past games with live info from the SAP event finals, to draw insights and explain player performance to the audience. Although there wasn’t prize money and reputation on the line, as in league esports, the event was a successful venture. It showcased this tech company’s enthusiasm to work in the industry.

A recipient of an SAP Innovation award in 2022, Team Liquid use SAP-powered data and analytics tools to help the team prepare for competitions and counter opponents’ tactics. The solutions are built on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) and include SAP HANA Cloud with artificial intelligence functionality. Being able to analyse data in real time enables pro gamers to optimise performance and make decisions during the match itself.

Among the many fields served by German business tech company SAP is sports analytics, which includes everything from venue operations to team performance. SAP’s in-game data analytics are used by major esports teams, “How do you find the 1 or 2% improvements? That’s what we try and search for,” says Victor Goossens, founder and co-CEO of Team Liquid. such as venerable Dutch organisation Team Liquid.

BLASTING OFF Gaming has gone from lone pursuit to big business in quick time

KVM for KDA At this year’s IBC Show in Amsterdam, Guntermann & Drunck demoed its technology for extending KVM control over IP, in gaming and esports as well as broadcast. At the G&D stand, the company showed attendees how KVM optimises workflow for producers in broadcasting competitions or major arena events. Its systems meet the requirements of professional gamers, the company claims: zero-latency and access to high-performance computers in real time, with high frame rates up to 240Hz.

Producers can also maintain access across multiple sources in real time and – with frame-rate conversion – make those signals available for viewers on a video wall or in streams in scaled form.
