In the cinema camera category, the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K offers the highest resolution, in a shockingly affordable package – it has recently been slashed in price. Red’s Komodo 6K finally hit the market at a record low cost for the American brand. It offers internal Red Raw codec with a Canon RF lens mount – and phase detection autofocus, too. Canon’s full-frame EOS C500 Mark II with internal Raw Light recording was a smash hit; then the EOS C300Mark III made a splash. With the same body and very similar spec – but using a new Super 35 sensor with radical Dual Gain Output technology – it comes in at a much lower price point. Next up was Canon’s new entry-level cinema camera, the EOS C70, which essentially took over from the C100Mark II. Sony’s popular FX9 was followed by the FX6 – and the FX3 brought its own spec in a radical way. With camcorders, live streaming continues to boom. JVC’s HM180, HC550 and HC900 continued to sell well, alongside Canon’s XF705 and new XA45 – as did Panasonic’s CX10, CX350 and X2000.

come with a screen. But the GH5 II was the big launch, taking the range to even greater heights. And the impressive, full-frame Lumix S5 has lots of the same tech as the flagship S1H, but in a smaller, lighter, more affordable package. Sony’s A7SMark III also hit the shelves in big numbers. And Sony was king of the waiting lists, as the new, 50-megapixel A1 8K and FX6 cinema camera continue to be in ridiculously high demand. Canon’s EOS R5 got firmware upgrades tomake it even better, and Sigma’s quirky fp L got a huge, 61-megapixel sensor, plus phase detection autofocus. Add in Nikon’s Z 6 II and it’s been a bumper year for full-frame mirrorless. Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro offered a tilting screen and internal Raw recording, as well as 6K resolution.
