Simulation Spotlight Delving into the world of FUJIFILM Film Simulations

Shadows are biased towards cyan- green, while highlights take on a magenta tint. The resulting palette feels immediately familiar – though without simply looking like a faded old photograph. This Film Simulation remains colourful through the midtones, while its deeper contrast provides added definition and depth, capturing the imperfect charm associated with photos from the analogue era. Designed to evoke the feeling of looking back at photographs from days gone by, CLASSIC Neg. has a naturally nostalgic quality. It works particularly well for everyday images, but its unusual colour rendering also makes it an interesting choice for more considered work.

Many Film Simulations draw inspiration from specific film stocks – frequently from Fujifilm’s own history of producing pro-grade emulsions for photographers and filmmakers. However, CLASSIC Neg. is based on consumer negative film that’s used to record everyday moments and create family photo albums. The distinctive character of consumer negative film has become closely associated with personal memories. CLASSIC Neg. recreates this aesthetic with hard contrast and strong colour contrast.

CLASSIC Neg. is based on FUJIFILM SUPERIA, a colour negative film loved by generations of photographers. Rather than reproducing the look of a single film stock, it draws on the character of consumer negative photography as a whole. This distinctive aesthetic makes it effective for snapshots, travel photography and everyday moments, though its characterful palette means it’s well worth exploring across other genres too.
