others, it’s a chance to honour a loved one or give back to a cause close to their heart. For Sunita, running the Cambridge Half Marathon became a celebration of life itself. In March 2024, the then 50-year-old former trainee teacher from Essex was fighting for her life. Just days after cooking for 20 guests at her husband’s birthday celebration, she developed acute liver failure and was rushed to hospital. What followed was a devastating series of complications, including an induced coma, multi-organ failure, dialysis, an emergency liver transplant, tracheostomy and almost a month in intensive care at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. When Sunita finally woke up, she faced an extraordinary challenge. Unable to speak, eat or walk independently, she had to relearn everyday skills through months of rehabilitation. Then, while rebuilding her strength, she received another devastating diagnosis: a rare form of blood cancer linked to the immunosuppressive medication she needed following her transplant. But Sunita refused to give up. While undergoing cancer treatment, she signed up to run the Cambridge Half Marathon for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT). In January 2026, she received the news she
A SECOND CHANCE Sunita signed up for the Cambridge Half Marathon 2026 while undergoing treatment for a rare form of blood cancer had been hoping for: she was cancer-free. “Because of the selfless gift of my donor, I get to lace up my trainers and take part in this race,” says Sunita. “This, for me, is not ‘just a half marathon’. It’s a deeply personal way to honour a second chance at life, raise awareness of organ donation and support a future where cancer care improves the lives of many.” ACT is inviting you to be part of that future.
