Veganuary Venues GOING PLANT BASED THIS JANUARY? TREAT YOURSELF TO A VEGAN FEAST AT ONE OF THESE CAMBRIDGE EATERIES

1 VETO MEATO Curries, burgers and gourmet kebabs await at Veto Meato, a plant-based eatery operating out of Ta Bouche in the city centre. Along with a range of ‘rebellious street food’ inspired by south- east Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines, there are vegan sides including kimchi fries and steamed greens topped with peanut sauce. For mains, there are bowls of vibrant veg with gochujang dressing and brown rice, plus a Middle Eastern offering with hummus, couscous and falafel. You can sit in, pick up a takeaway or get delivery via Foodstuff. 2 TAWA KITCHEN If you think Indian cuisine is all heavy curries and rice, Tawa Kitchen wants to make you think again. Offering a menu of light, healthy dishes from its sleek Station Road restaurant, the vegan options are plentiful, from classic vegetable samosas to coconut dumplings, hearty lentil dhals and the Persian pomegranate chole, with chickpeas steeped in a fruity tea blend and simmered with masala potatoes. 3 VANDERLYLE The restaurant may currently be closed, but Vanderlyle To Go – its lockdown-born takeaway service – is delighting taste buds around the city. Usually the restaurant serves plant-based tasting menus, but Vanderlyle To Go offers family meal-style feasts, priced at £20 per person and available to order via Tock. You’ll be treated to freshly baked bread, a starter, main course, side dish, dessert

and petit fours – all of which can be made vegan upon request. 4 VEGAN VICE CLUB The luminous Miami Vice-style branding grabs your attention, but it’s the flavour bomb burgers that make Vegan Vice Club the talk of the town. Now housed at The Snug on East Road, the restaurant makes plant-based patties, superlative sides and the creamiest milkshakes – all without an animal product in sight. You can choose between a soy-based burger or a crispy ‘vegan chick’n fillet’, served in a bouncy brioche bun, with toppings including smoky peanut butter BBQ sauce, chilli mayo and purple slaw. Don’t skimp on sides: we particularly love the ‘truffle cheezy fries’ and the vanilla caramel and salted pretzel milkshake. You can dine in or order via Foodstuff, Deliveroo and Uber Eats. veganvice.club 5 THRIVE A relatively new vegan cafe, Thrive opened its doors during the first lockdown, having revamped the old CB2 cafe building on the corner of Norfolk Street and East Road. It’s the passion project of five friends who met through a love of vegan food and great coffee, and there are plans for yoga classes, gigs and more at the cafe’s beautiful three- storey building when normality returns. There’s a lot to tempt on the menu: we’ve heard excellent things about the tofish and chips with minted mushy peas, but the Korean BBQ sticky tofu and plant-based breakfast burritos also sound delicious.
