Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve

DxO Photo Lab 9

Cost: Free

Price: From £110

Blackmagic Design has recently made waves with news that the update to DaVinci Resolve 21 brings its renowned colour grading tools into the world of still photography. The Photo page allows photographers to use Resolve’s powerful node- based workflow on images, enabling complex, layered adjustments. This offers greater control than slider-based systems found in software like Lightroom. Being able to build grades using nodes – including parallel corrections and shared looks across multiple images – makes it appealing for consistent workflows. Features like Lightbox view and album-based organisation speed up batch editing, while non-destructive cropping and reframing preserve full image quality. Tethered shooting support for Canon and Sony gives it further appeal. Many see Resolve as a serious alternative for those familiar with video grading – effectively bridging the gap between stills and motion workflows. The basic version is free. blackmagicdesign.com

DxO Photo Lab 9 is an advanced, end-to-end Raw editing package. If you are new, the licence will cost you £220, but if you’re an existing user and looking to upgrade, the price drops to £110. This licence is for life, and DxO offers the option of paying in four instalments. Available for both MacOS and Windows, DxO has won multiple TIPA awards for its software, and Photo Lab 9 will be of interest to photographers who shoot in low light using high ISO levels, as the noise reduction properties of the software are acclaimed, thanks to DxO’s Deep Prime technology. Images that may have been deemed as unusable could well be transformed into fine frames with greatly reduced noise. Detail is a key element with Photo Lab 9, and the software uses DxO Modules to apply tailored corrections that will help eliminate softness to deliver the sharpest image possible. dxo.com

Evoto is an AI photo editor that differs from most photo editing solutions because it’s AI-powered. Offering a free trial, users buy credits to spend on changing images. Although AI may sound scary, there’s far more to this software than meets the eye. Auto colour corrections are available via a one-click process, but there are more familiar sliders, so those transitioning across from existing Raw software programs feel more comfortable. For more enhanced editing, the AI features lend themselves to People Remover, which clears extra subjects from the background; AI Photo Eraser, which will remove a distracting car for example from the frame; or AI Background Fusion, which will select your subject as a Mask Layer and allow you to use a selection of pre- shot backgrounds. You can give your images a star rating and see a before and after view of the editing changes. evoto.ai
