Aftershoot is an AI-driven automation tool built to solve the tedious job of culling and basic editing. In fact, as Aftershoot says on its own website, ‘most photographers cut their post-production time by 90%’. A bold claim, but in the world of a busy photographer, time is precious. The app process is simple: import, cull, edit, retouch, then export. There are four tiers of pricing, but you can take advantage of a 30-day free trial to test the waters, and the software is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. In fact, the software can be used as a plug-in option with Photoshop and Lightroom. With features like identifying the best shots from a session – grouping duplicates and flagging blurs or closed eyes – it’s no wonder this software is favoured by wedding and event photographers. aftershoot.com

Portrait Pro 24 is a specialist retouching software that is perfect for professional portrait photographers. Why? Well, because the software can recognise facial features and apply realistic enhancements such as skin smoothing and face reshaping via an interface that takes advantage of simple sliders. A new feature for this version of the software introduces an advanced Inpaint Mouth & Teeth option, along with the ability to reduce reflections in subjects wearing spectacles. With these features available, it’s no surprise that Anthropics Portrait Pro 24 is well suited to professional headshot and corporate photographers who need to edit an SD card full of portraits on a deadline. Although the pricing starts from £49.95, the Studio Max version offers additional features such as direct Raw support. anthropics.com

Viewed by many as perhaps the closest direct competitor to Photoshop, Affinity Photo 2 is a powerful system offering a massive feature set without the monthly fee. In fact, although it previously was a paid-for program, Affinity is now free to download and use. A well- rounded software program, Affinity Photo 2 can pretty much do it all and is available for both Windows and MacOS. It is excellent for HDR merging, panorama stitching and focus stacking, but you can also dive much deeper and colour grade or manipulate imagery with Layers. The software is available for iPad too, so you can edit on the go. If you feel comfortable with the user interface, there is a wider Affinity ecosystem available for design and publishing work, plus if you need support, there are hundreds of tutorials available on YouTube, which will provide plenty of inspiration to edit your images in a new way. affinity.studio
