I f there’s one company that loves to do things that bit differently, it’s Blackmagic Design. And not just because the people at its Australian HQ obviously have a sense of humour, such as calling the seven-inch wide 6K camera complete with five-inch rear touchscreen and a large lens on the front a ‘Pocket Cinema Camera’. Or perhaps dubbing the new 12K Ursa cinema camera the ‘Mini’. With the highest resolving power of any camera on the market, and with its solid metal body weighing in at around 4.5kg/9.9lb with a compact V-Lock battery and small prime lens, it’s hardly a compact option. What really makes Blackmagic different is that it is the only company to get totally involved with the three vital technical stages of making movies. It has its own sensor technology that’s different to anyone else’s, which records in the company’s own Blackmagic Raw

format, which is edited and graded in Blackmagic’s industry-standard DaVinci Resolve software. That gives total integration at the three key stages of creating moving images in terms of quality and control. No other camera company can do that, with many outsourcing sensors, using other people’s recording formats for footage that’s edited in a whole range of NLEs. Of course, Blackmagic is far more than a camera company, as it is a pioneer in live production switching, recording, editing and broadcasting. That gives it a unique perspective in high-quality moviemaking, in all aspects of production. And often with kit at a price that is surprisingly affordable. Or free, in the case of the basic version of DaVinci Resolve. Of course, simply coming out with a camera that can record in 12K is a groundbreaking move anyway. With 4K now becoming the norm
