COB LED LIGHTS
L ED rules as far as filmmakers are concerned, as it has improved immeasurably in the last few years. Once, they may have suffered from inconsistent colour and a lack of power compared to tungsten and HMI. But now, these smaller and lighter lamps don’t need to warm up – or even require vast power generators to run. They are flicker-free and can be controlled wirelessly via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or DMX, too.
Those original lights used small clusters of LED bulbs – and were daylight-balanced or bicolour, to match to daylight or tungsten. We now have COB technology. Instead of separate bulbs, these new ‘chip on board’ lights use multiple LED chips bonded closely together to form a smaller, single module. COB fixtures pump out a lot of power, and their small form means they perform like punchy, hard, single-point light sources. This means they work well with light
