IBC PREVIEW
MAKE A STAND Here we show again! The huge IBC filmmaking expo returns to the Amsterdam RAI halls after a Covid-enforced sabbatical
A fter being axed due to the global pandemic since it last ran in 2019, the huge filmmaking expo that is the IBC show is back at its usual venue in Amsterdam’s RAI halls from 9-12 September. It’s on a mission to deliver the new normal in the most engaging way. Quite how different the show turns out to be remains to be seen, but it’s certainly great to have one of the mainstays of the calendar back in the diary. As always, scour the halls for the latest services and technologies from a huge variety of brands, but IBC is much more than that. You can pay for the high-level, two-day IBC Conference, which hosts the influential minds in the industry and covers all key areas. Hear from keynote speakers and take a deep dive into technical paper presentations. There are also plenty of free-to-attend events, including the Changemaker Programme, Innovation Stage and Showcase Theatre. Each offers sessions from trailblazing organisations and initiatives shaking up the industry. Regular IBC-goers will be delighted to hear that the Beach is back, where you can relax away from the show floor and reunite with colleagues over a drink. Take to the halls The IBC show is simply huge and it’s easy to cover many miles as you move between the halls. If you’d like to streamline your visit, Hall 12 should be your main point of focus, with companies showcasing lighting, lenses, grips and more. The Arri stand (F18 and F21) is sure to be a highlight, giving an ideal chance to take a look at the latest and greatest the company has to offer. Don’t miss the opportunity to get the lowdown on the Alexa 35, complete with the first new Arri sensor for over a decade. Also enjoy the recent addition to the Orbiter range – the fresnel lens. A stone’s throw from the Arri stand is optical giant Zeiss (G36), where the
Supreme Primes are sure to take centre stage. The most recent addition, the Supreme Prime 15mm T1.8, completed the family, which now comprises 14 optics covering focal lengths from 15 to 200mm. From the Zeiss stand, you won’t have to move too far to see the lighting experts at Astera (G43). The company provides a broad range of LED solutions, including tubes, pixel bars, individual lights, controllers and more. Check out the HydraPanel – a battery-powered unit that pushes out an impressive 1300 lumens across the spectrum. The panels can be used individually or in a group of up to four. We test the panel kit in this issue. Rounding off Hall 12 highlights is Vocas (D25), providing a wide range of accessories including matte boxes, rig items and follow focus systems, alongside brand/camera specific add-ons for the likes of Sony, Arri, Red and Canon. The company’s five-axis dioptre holder is a neat item for those who like to experiment. Hall 11 presents Canon, Red, MRMC and Aputure. When you’ve taken those stands in, make a beeline for Videndum (C40), home of SmallHD, Wooden Camera and Anton-Bauer, plus Litepanels and Quasar Science. From Litepanels, the Gemini 2x1 Hard is a must-see. Brighter than any other 2x1 panel, yet lighter than its peers, it delivers up to 23,000 lux, plus has the flexibility to be able to switch from a 20° beam of hard white light to a 100° soft wash. Quasar Science offers lighting solutions for virtual production, along with pixel bars and kits that can light everything – from actors to environments. In Hall 7, you can tick Blackmagic, Teradek and Adobe off your list. You will also find Seagate Technologies (B05). Ask for a demo of the Lyve Cloud solution, offering paid-for, always-on cloud storage for mass data. If you prefer to have a physical storage device, be sure to explore the Lyve Mobile range – a high-capacity edge storage solution that eliminates network dependencies.
