Canon R5C It takes all of the video-centric benefits of the 8K EOS R5 including its massive range of high- end codecs and removes the biggest bugbear – which was overheating.

Canon EOS R7 Canon’s first APS-C EOS R system cameras, the EOS R7 is suited to wildlife and sports shooters due to the added reach of a cropped sensor, as well as tracking autofocus.

productions like an Arri Alexa, the Red V-Raptor or Sony Venice, then mirrorless cameras will never truly be viable for a main camera, simply because of ergonomics and workflow. But in terms of pure image quality and technical specifications, it is remarkable how close we are. There are even some mirrorless cameras that actually take things further than most cinema cameras. Canon’s R5 and R5 C can do 8K Raw internally. Historically, that’s firmly in Red territory, yet now these tiny hybrids have the same functionality. Then there’s Fujifilm’s fantastic X-H2S, which uses a stacked sensor running at 14-bit processing to provide a level of dynamic range and rolling shutter readout that is hugely impressive for a mirrorless camera at its price point. Why would you still buy a cinema camera? The reasons to invest in a dedicated video tool like the FX6 or C70 are numerous. There are image quality differences, but how much varies with each brand’s approach. As a rule, they still produce nicer images with less compression, more dynamic range and better noise reduction. However, the main advantages are in other areas, like ergonomics. Cinema cameras will often have a physical design more suited for video use, rather than being held up to the eye like a photography camera. They will have buttons specifically designed for video functions, rather than having to remap buttons for stills functions like autofocus control. They will have better audio inputs, like XLR with phantom power, as well as easier audio control, monitoring and preamps. They will have more exposure tools like waveform, false colour, zebras and more. They will normally have ND filters to avoid having to use third-party options. Overall, they are simply the right tool for the job – designed from the ground up specifically for video work. SUPER 35 The Canon EOS C70 is the entry point to the Cinema EOS line and features a cropped sensor, plus unique styling and ergonomics

Sony FX3 Take the incredible spec of the A7S III and put it inside a body that’s far better for filmmaking. That’s the basis of the popular Sony FX3.

Sony FX30 The affordable new FX30 is the latest hybrid camera and marks a return of the evergreen APS-C crop sensor to Sony’s cinema line. It’s like a mini FX3.

So, are mirrorless cameras the wrong tool for the job? Absolutely not! Many mirrorless cameras are powerful tools for video creation. They have distinct advantages as well. They’re lighter, easier to travel with and easier to fix to a gimbal or a slider. They normally cost much less, which opens the door to creators for whom pricier cinema cameras are out of reach. But the lower price also means that if you did have the budget for a high-end camera, you could potentially own several mirrorless cameras instead for the same money. For a small production company, that’s really important. Plus, they normally take fantastic photographs – let’s not forget about that! Fujifilm X-H2S The video-centric X-H2S is a very capable camera for video, with a highly impressive spec and at a great price – considering it has a stacked sensor and excellent AF.
